Let’s do a quick test. Let’s try to assess your presence in the lives of your potential customers – Web 2.0 customers.

But first, let me tell you a little interesting story. The story of Pierre and Company X.

Don’t worry. This Peter has nothing to do with the one in the Bible.

Pierre is the man who lives next door to you, a few streets away from the headquarters of a company we’ll call ‘Company X’, a firm that produces and sells local fruit juice. But Pierre doesn’t know that.

This morning, as part of a get-together with friends, Pierre is looking to treat them to some locally produced cashew fruit juice. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know where to buy it.

As he is not aware of any company that supplies this product, he therefore has the following options:

  1. Ask a friend or an acquaintance.
  2. Search online.

Like 80 per cent of today’s consumers, Pierre opens Google and carries out searches such as these:

  • Cashew juice seller in Benin
  • Cashew juice production company in Benin
  • Shop selling cashew juice in Benin
  • Cashew juice nearby
  • Etc.

After a few moments, Pierre found a company from which he placed an order straight away. This company is almost 16 kilometres from his home. It is further away from his home than Company X, which has just missed out on a potential customer.

Like Pierre, many of your potential customers use Google to find you and to buy your products or services. Geographical proximity is no longer enough. People may be in the same neighbourhood as you, but they buy from your competitor who is a long way away – simply because you’re not online.

Are you like Company X, which will continue to lose potential customers because it doesn’t have an online presence?

If it’s your product that Pierre has been searching for online, will he find your company?

If someone searches for you on Google, will you appear in the search results?

Let’s try a test. It’ll help you find the answer.

Open Google and search for your business. Enter the phrases or keywords that Pierre would have typed in if it were your product or service he needed.

Let us know the result in the comments.

Now that you’ve done this exercise, let me share this valuable information with you.

Many people have more confidence in Google and its search results. They’re convinced that if Google recommends something, it must be better – that’s the one to choose.
